The following is a list of some of the unsafe ingredients commonly used in commercial skin care products. We call it the The UnHip List because we believe their use is unacceptable, uncool, and far from hip! We are committed to NEVER use any of these in any of our products – ever!

Aluminum

Aluminum is used in antiperspirants to decrease sweat production. It basically blocks the sweat ducts, preventing perspiration. This is bad for a couple of reasons. Medical research shows that aluminum can accumulate in your body, and it has been tied to Alzheimer’s, dementia and some cancers. In addition to the potential harmful effects of the aluminum itself, preventing sweating, which is a natural function of your body, can interfere with your body's effort to regulate its temperature, expel excess water, and release toxins.

Artificial Colors/Dyes

Artificial Colors/Dyes are chemical additives used in place of natural options to alter the coloring of cosmetics, soaps, lotions, shampoos, and more. These dyes are often made up of multiple synthetic chemicals, which are rarely listed in full on product labels, so it's difficult to know exactly what you may be being exposed to. Some of these colorants even contain coal tar and heavy metals (including lead). Artificial colors can cause skin irritations, disrupt immune system functions, and even cause mood changes, such as depression and irritability.

Chemical/Synthetic Fragrances

Chemical/Synthetic Fragrances are man-made substances added to many consumer products to give them a distinct or pleasant scent and to stabilize that scent so that it lingers. Many of the synthetic chemicals in fragrances or perfumes are derived from petrochemicals (petroleum-based), and can be harmful to human health. Others, such as phthalates, benzene derivatives, aldehydes, and toluene, are are linked to a variety of serious health problems, including cancer, endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity, allergies and sensitivities. Many products simply list “fragrance” on the label, but don't include a list of the specific ingredients that make up the “fragrance.” This lack of disclosure leaves consumers in the dark about possible toxic chemical exposure.

Chemical/Synthetic Preservatives

Parabens

Parabens are a specific class of chemical preservatives used in 75-90% commercial cosmetics and other personal care products to prevent the breakdown of biodegradable ingredients and hinder the growth of bacteria and mold in order to increase shelf life. Scientific studies suggest that parabens can disrupt the endocrine system (hormones), contribute to infertility and reproductive issues, and increase the risk of some cancers. They can also cause skin irritation.

Sulfates

Sulfates are detergents, or surfactants, commonly found in products like shampoo, body wash, and facial cleanser, as well as household cleaning products such as laundry and dish detergents. The most common sulfate-based ingredients found in personal care products are sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate. These detergents can be extremely harsh on your skin, often causing irritation or triggering allergies.
